Once you've arrived in the mountains, a few places are worth heading out for.

Once you're settled in the mountains, you don't really need to rush out.
The room, the balcony, the second-floor lounge — easy to spend half a day right there.

But if you feel like heading out, here are a few places we go ourselves.
Listed by distance: the closest (Hexing Station) is 5 minutes by car; the furthest (Laoying Creek) is an hour — all easy day trips.

Places We Like

01

Hexing Station 合興車站

The 'love station' on the Neiwan Line — pink heart installations, a restored wooden station house, a retired steam locomotive. Quieter than Neiwan itself.

About 5 min by car

02

Neiwan Old Street 內灣老街

A Hakka village known for ginger-lily-leaf rice dumplings, black peanuts, and a café inside a restored 1950s cinema. Weekday mornings are quietest.

About 10 min by car

03

Neiwan Suspension Bridge 內灣吊橋

A red suspension bridge across the Youluo River. From the middle you can see the mountains, the river, and the railway tracks below. Best light is early morning or dusk — pairs well with the old street for a half-day walk.

About 10 min by car

04

Matai Old Trail 馬胎古道

Cross the Yixing Bridge and turn right into the forest. A streamside trail through old-growth trees and a single-cable suspension bridge. About 2.5 hours round trip. Rarely crowded on weekdays.

About 15 min by car

05

Frog Rock Sky Walk 青蛙石天空步道

A glass observation platform in Jianshi, cantilevered over the Naluo River. Below is a frog-shaped boulder and a waterfall — rainbows appear in the spray on clear days. Ticketed, shuttle bus required.

About 20 min by car

06

Jianshi Township 尖石鄉

The neighboring township, home to Atayal indigenous villages. Hot springs at Jinping, lavender gardens, mountain-view restaurants, nighttime city lights from the ridge. Worth a full day.

About 20 min by car

07

Laoying Creek Trail 老鷹溪步道

Deep in Jianshi at Yufeng Village. The 1km trail leads to Lipu Waterfall, 15m tall and 20m wide. About 40 minutes round trip including photos. Far but worth it for a day trip.

About 60 min by car
